Walter E. Heller College of Business

The College of Business at Roosevelt University is named for Walter E. Heller, who took over his father’s successful sausage casing business as a young man. Over the years, Mr. Heller expanded to jewelry and then automobile financing, pursuing his business interests, no matter what they were, with vigor. Those who remember him say that he was always the first to arrive at the office in the morning and the last to leave at night. His firm became the preeminent asset-based commercial lender from the 1940s through the 1960s, providing funding for many high profile Hollywood movie studios, including United Artists Corporation. Over the years, Mr. Heller’s company acquired more organizations and expanded overseas. He died in 1969 and his widow, Alyce DeCosta, gifted $2 million to Roosevelt University to build a 10-story classroom, laboratory and library facility. In addition, Mrs. DeCosta established the Walter E. Heller Lecture Series in International Business and Finance while serving as a Board of Trustees of Roosevelt University.
