SHRM Student Chapters in California

shrmNicknamed the “Golden State,” California is well-known for its Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Bears, fields of golden poppies, golden coastal sunsets over the Pacific Ocean, and golden opportunities to attend some of the best universities in the entire United States. California is also home to 20 Student Chapters of the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), which is the largest association on the globe devoted solely to advancements in Human Resources.

With more than 250,000 members in over 140 countries, SHRM serves the needs of HR professionals through local chapters dotted across the map. When college students take advantage of joining a SHRM Student Chapter, they can benefit from increasing their HR knowledge and connections through conferences, internships, fundraisers, workshops, and other networking activities. The following are the 20 Student Chapters for the SHRM on university campuses across California.

California Polytechnic State University

Positioned at the halfway mark between Los Angeles and San Francisco in San Luis Obispo, California Polytechnic State University is currently recognized as the 9th best college in the West by U.S. News and World Report. As one of the six academic colleges at Cal Poly, the Orfalea College of Business offers enrolled students high-quality undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

Students can pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration or a Bachelor of Economics, with concentrations in Entrepreneurship, Financial Management, Information Systems, or Management and Human Resources. Graduate students can achieve a Master of Business Administration (MBA) or a Master of Science in Economics. Members of the Cal Poly SHRM Student Chapter are given unparalleled access to HR experience through internships with Deloitte Consulting, Aerotek Recruiting, Intel Corporation, Target, Hewlett-Packard, and many more well-known corporations.

California State Polytechnic University – Pomona

Located 30 miles east of the metropolitan hub of Los Angeles, California State Polytechnic University – Pomona has been ranked as the 33rd best college in the West by U.S. News and World Report. The College of Business Administration (CBA) has also received special recognition by being included in the 2014 edition of “The Best 295 Business Schools” from Princeton Review. The college offers students a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with concentrations in Accounting, International Business, Operations Management, and Human Resources Management, as well as a Master of Business Administration.

The Cal Poly Pomona Professionals in Human Resources Association is the SHRM Student Chapter that offers various opportunities for all members to become more educated in Human Resources. Members are able to participate in many Southern California professional activities, including community service outings, socials, fundraisers, seminars, and presentations about Human Resources. Although all Cal Poly Pomona students are welcome to apply, membership costs $35 each year. Meetings for the SHRM Student Chapter are conducted every Tuesday, except the third Tuesday each month, from 12 to 12:50 PM in Room 1004 of Building 163.

California State University – Bakersfield

Currently ranked as the 90th best college and 37th top public school in the West, California State University at Bakersfield is a comprehensive public university located on a 375-acre campus in downtown Bakersfield. Within the School of Business and Public Administration, students can pursue an undergraduate bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Environmental Resource Management, Public Administration, and Economics. For graduate students, there are strong Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree options.

The CSUB Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) Student Chapter is organized to promote Human Resources knowledge on campus, connect students with similar career interests, and interact with the Kern County professional SHRM chapter to build strong relationships in the field. Each year, members of the chapter participate in the HRGames, which is a one or two-day series of game style competitions based on HR practices between various colleges. During the fall quarter, CSUB SHRM Student Chapter meetings are held each Wednesday from 4 to 5 PM in SCI 103.

California State University – Chico

First founded in 1887, California State University at Chico is the second oldest California State University and ranked as the 42nd best college in the West by U.S. News and World Report. The university also has one of the highest freshman graduation rates in the state system and a highly distinguished track record for placing graduates within Fortune 500 companies. The College of Business offers a Bachelor of Business Administration with concentrations in Management and Human Resource Management, as well as a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree for graduate students.

The Human Resource and Management Association of CSU Chico endeavors to provide students with an entertaining, enriching, and experiential environment that promotes the development of positive professional competencies in management, human resource management, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Members of the SHRM Student Chapter attend bi-weekly meetings that usually feature guest speakers from local or non-local organizations and associations to network with HR professionals.

California State University – East Bay

Ranked as the 90th best college in the West by U.S. News and World Report, California State University East Bay is quickly becoming one of the San Francisco Bay area’s premier public universities. The CSU EB College of Business and Economics offers a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics degree program for undergraduates. Graduate students can pursue a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree with a concentration in Entrepreneurship, Finances, Human Resources and Organizational Behavior, or Operations and Supply Chain Management. California State University – Fresno

Nestled at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the central region of the state, California State University at Fresno is ranked as the 36th best college and 8th top public school in the West. Within the CSU Fresno Craig School of Business, students can pursue a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting, International Business, Management, Human Resource Management, or Computer Information Systems. The School also offers the AACSB-accredited Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) options.

CSU Fresno students interested in Human Resources are highly encouraged to join the award-winning and high-achieving SHRM Student Chapter organization on campus. The chapter has been nominated as a Top 10 Student Chapter in the nation, received the prestigious SHRM Superior Merit Award for the last 14 years, and been crowned the champions of the HRGames competition. For just $35 in dues each semester, students can join the CSU Fresno Student Chapter to attend meetings, seminars, workshops, and networking opportunities on present issues in Human Resources.

California State University – Long Beach

With its stunning location overlooking the crystal waters of the Pacific Ocean, California State University at Long Beach is a public university that is currently ranked as the 32nd best college in the West by the U.S. News and World Report. Not only is the CSULB College of Business Administration accredited by the prestigious AACSB, it has also been named as one of the “Best 295 Business Schools” by the 2014 edition of the Princeton Review. Graduate students interested in Human Resources can pursue a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resource Management.

CSU Long Beach hosts the Human Resource Management Association, a student chapter combined from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the Professionals in Human Resources Association (PHIRA). Although the emphasis is on providing networking opportunities and internships in Human Resources, all majors are welcome to apply. With a semester membership fee of $30, members can participate in a wide variety of student activities, such as the recent HRMA Bonfire Social. The Student Chapter meetings are held each Tuesday from 5 to 6 PM in the College of Business Room 124.

California State University – Sacramento

Presently ranked as 66th best college and 22nd top public school in the West, California State University at Sacramento utilizes its location in the heart of California’s capital city to provide students with life-changing career opportunities to become leaders in their field. Although the Sacramento State College of Business Administration offers just one bachelor’s degree program, they offer graduate students a Master of Business Administration (MBA), International MBA, MBA for Executives, and Master of Science in Accountancy. California State University – Stanislaus

As the perfect blend of a modern atmosphere with the pastoral charm of the Central Valley countryside, California State University at Stanislaus is ranked as the 57th best college and 17th top public school in the West by the U.S. News and World Report 2014 Survey. Within the College of Business Administration, students can achieve a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in Finance, Computer Information Systems, Operations Management, or Marketing. Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Executive MBA programs are also available for graduate students.

Cal State Stanislaus also provides students with an official SHRM Student Chapter that has been consistently chosen to be the official host campus for the National SHRM conference. For the low cost of $35 each year, student membership to the chapter includes a subscription to HR Magazine, discounted prices at the SHRM Store, access to the SHRM Annual Conference Exposition to attend more than 150 educational sessions, and ability to participate in the chapter’s student organization activities. Members of the chapter meet on Tuesdays from 2 to 4 PM in DBH 118.

At the foothills of the beautiful San Bernardino Mountains in an intellectual hub of activity in the Inland Empire, California State University at San Bernardino is ranked as a tie for the 57th best college and 17th top public school in the West. The CSUSB College of Business and Public Administration has also been named as one of the world’s 18 most innovative business schools by European CEO Magazine. Graduate students in the School can pursue a Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Public Administration (MPA), or Master of Science in Accountancy (MSA) degree. First established in 2010, the SHRM Student Chapter at CSUSB helps students become connected to the evolving field of Human Resources through competitions, conferences, workshops, internships, and social events.

In the recent 2014 survey by the U.S. News and World Report, California State University at San Marcos has been ranked as the 70th best college and 26th top public school in the West for its exemplary teaching and application of the newest technologies. The CSUSM College of Business Administration is also one of the leading business education leaders in the San Diego metropolitan area. San Diego State University

As the only university in the state to have experienced double-digit boosts in the graduation rate for the last ten years, San Diego State University is known for being a leading public research university. In addition to being ranked as the 152nd best college and 81st top public school in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, SDSU also has been named as the 8th best college in the nation for students graduating with the least amount of debt. Ranked as the 86th best business school in the nation, the SDSU College of Business Administration offers a Bachelor in Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources. As the foremost voice of students interested in a Human Resources career, the SHRM Student Chapter at San Diego State provides students with the opportunity to supplement their classroom education with hands-on practice. Although the Chapter membership requires just a $10 fee, students who wish to become officers will need to join the National SHRM for $35. Members of the Chapter are welcome to attend all events and meetings, which take place each Tuesday at 4 PM in Scripps Pavilion and often include an HR professional guest speaker.

San Francisco State University

Known for enrolling the largest number of international students among all comprehensive universities in the United States, San Francisco State University is ranked as the 54th best college and 16th top public school in the West by U.S. News and World Report. In the SFSU College of Business, undergraduates can pursue a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Decision Sciences, Small Business Management, Information Systems, International Business, or Management. San Jose State University

Conveniently situated on 154 acres in the heart of downtown San Jose at the sunny southern end of the San Francisco Bay, San Jose State University is currently ranked by the 2014 edition of the U.S. News and World Report as the 36th best college and 8th top public school in the West. Sonoma State University

Ranked as the 42nd best college and 10th top public school in the West, Sonoma State University is located in the center of wine country in the northern California Sonoma Valley. The Sonoma State School of Business offers students a Bachelor in Business Administration, Bachelor in Economics, and a graduate Master of Business Administration. The School also offers the only program in the nation that centers exclusively on the business side of the thriving local wine industry with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Wine Business Strategies.
