SHRM Student Chapters in Georgia

Situated in the southeastern region of the United States along the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean and bordered by the famous Blue Ridge Mountains, Georgia is the 24th most extensive and 8th most populous state, with 14 of its counties ranked among the nation’s fastest-growing. As the largest state east of the Mississippi River, it is no surprise that the “Peach State” is packed full of high-ranking universities that offer aspiring HR professionals the training necessary to be successful. Along with top-notch curricula, there are several SHRM Student Chapters in Georgia colleges and universities.

Representing all 50 states and more than 140 countries around the world, the Society for Human Resource Management is the largest association devoted exclusively to human resources on the globe. With the mission of serving the various needs of HR professionals and advancing the interests of the field, the SHRM has more than 450 affiliated student chapters nationwide. Through becoming a member of a student SHRM chapter, individuals benefit from receiving the opportunity for networking with local or global HR professionals to help expand their learning and participate in real-world experiences. The following are the student chapters of the Society for Human Resource Management that offer memberships to learn more about the world of business in Georgia.

Clark Atlanta University

Located in the heart of downtown metropolitan Atlanta as the largest collection of black private higher education in the nation, Clark Atlanta University is currently ranked as the 9th best historically black college in the nation by the U.S. News and World Report. Within the Department of Public Administration, students receive the unique opportunity to earn a Master of Public Administration (MPA) with a specialization in Human Resources. Through the curriculum, students engage in coursework on organizational theory, labor relations, strategic planning, compensation management, employee assistance program counseling, and budgeting. Students can also supplement their learning by joining the CAU student SHRM chapter, where they can participate in mock interviews, perfect their resume skills, find HR internships, and attend bi-monthly meetings for networking opportunities.

Clayton State University

With the most diverse student bodies in the Southeast and the distinction of being one of just a dozen “Notebook Universities” nationwide, Clayton State University is currently ranked as the 66th best college and 8th top public school in the South by the U.S. News and World Report. While the College of Business offers students a pathway to earning a Master of Business Administration with added elective courses relevant to Human Resources, the School of Graduate Studies also provides students with the ability to enroll in an SHRM Learning System for PHR/SPHR Certification Preparation Certificate program. Furthermore, students are encouraged to join the student SHRM chapter on-campus to advance their understanding of the fundamentals of Human Resource Management for certification and job placement.

Columbus College

Situated in the heart of Columbus with more than 4,000 students, Columbus College is a public institution governed by the Technical College System of Georgia for providing degrees in business, sciences, and health services. Within the Columbus School of Business, students have the opportunity to pursue a five-semester Master of Human Resource Management degree as well as a Master of Science in Business Management. Although the degree program intends to emphasize specific professional knowledge, theory, and skills required for job acquisition, it is highly recommended that students join the on-campus student SHRM chapter to benefit from the advancement of career potential in diverse opportunities in the Human Resources field.

Columbus State University

Situated about 100 miles southwest of Atlanta as part of the public University System of Georgia with more than 8,200 students, Columbus State University is ranked as the 92nd best college, 47th top public school, and 25th best university for veterans by the U.S. News and World Report for 2014. Within the CSU Turner College of Business, students may pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Human Resources or a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership with a concentration track in Human Resources Management. Sponsored by the SHRM Columbus Area Professional Chapter, the CSU SHRM Student Chapter provides students with the opportunity to attend meetings on the first Tuesday of each month at 12:30 PM in Building CCT Room 205. Along with free lunch, the monthly meetings include a guest speaker presentation covering a hot topic in Human Resources and the chance to mingle with fellow HR majors.

DeVry University

Recognized by the U.S. News and World Report survey for having the 131st best online graduate business programs in the nation, DeVry University is a multi-campus private institution with a location in the heart of Atlanta’s thriving North Perimeter area within close proximity to Fortune 500 corporate headquarters. Within the Keller Graduate School of Management, students can earn a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a concentration in Human Resource Management or pursue a specialized Master of Human Resource Management (MHRM) degree program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). The DVU Student Chapter of SHRM also offers its student members a variety of activities, including networking opportunities, workshops, and a distinguished speak series with HR professionals in the greater Atlanta area.

Georgia Southern University

Home to more than 18,000 students in the rural setting of Statesboro around 170 miles north of Jacksonville in Florida, the Georgia Southern University is a comprehensive public institution that ranks as the 236th best research university in the nation and 169th top school in the South by Forbes magazine. Accredited by the Association for Advancement of Collegiate Business Education (AACSB), the College of Business offers an on-campus or online Master of Business Administration degree with concentrations in International Business, Information Systems, Health Services Administration, and Global Management. Students can also decide to earn a post-baccalaureate Certificate in Professional Human Resources Management in order to prepare for the HR Certification Institution examination. The Department of Management hosts student chapters for the SHRM and business honor society Beta Gamma Sigma for aspiring HR professionals.

Georgia State University

Ranked as the 177th best research university in the nation and 95th top college in the Southeast by Forbes magazine, Georgia State University is a public institution in the heart of the downtown business center of Atlanta. Noted as the 14th top up-and-coming school in the nation by the U.S. News and World Report, the GSU Department of Managerial Sciences offers a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resource Management, Organization Management, or Operations Management. With an annual membership fee of just $15, aspiring HR professionals are encouraged to join the GSU SHRM student chapter to participate in speaker events, resume/LinkedIn workshops, conferences, and networking with the bigger SHRM chapters as well as to receive special graduation chords and job references. Members of the student chapter are welcomed to join in on the monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at 4 PM in RCB Building Room 300.

Saint Leo University – Fort McPherson

While Saint Leo University may be based in Saint Leo in Florida, the private non-profit Roman Catholic liberal arts institution has a satellite Fort McPherson campus situated in the heart of Morrow. One of the nation’s top 10 leading providers of higher education to the U.S. Military, Saint Leo is ranked as the 55th best college and 11th top university for veterans in the South by the U.S. News and World Report. Undergraduate students have the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Human Resource Management, whereas graduate students can pursue a Master of Business Administration in Human Resource Management or Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management. Affiliated with the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), UWG hosts the Management Club as an opportunity for students to network with peers and business leaders in the community as well as stay on top of current events that affect managers today.
