SHRM Student Chapters in Connecticut

Connecticut, the 4th most densely populated state, has many people; therefore, it needs plenty of human resources professionals to manage its many employees. Students preparing for a career in Human Resources in the state of Connecticut have a great selection of schools to choose from to earn their degree.

Along with top-notch curricula, many schools also have student chapters of the SHRM. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is an organization that provides resources, networking and programming opportunities to Human Resource (HR) professionals and students around the world. We’ve researched all of the schools in Connecticut that provide their HR students with an opportunity for student membership in the SHRM and they are listed and described below.

EASTERN CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY

Labor Relations and Human Resource Management (LHR) undergraduate majors at Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) earn a Bachelor’s of Arts (BA) degree upon successful completion of all requirements, including an internship. The curriculum at ECSU prepares students for employment in a broad spectrum of industries. In addition to careers in human resources management, students who earn their degree can expect to be well prepared for careers in labor relations, policy analysis and management and for graduate school. ECSU has a Master of Science in Organizational Management program for those interested in furthering their education.

Involvement in the SHRM student chapter will open doors for the required internship and begin networking possibilities for open positions once graduated. Potential summer and part-time employment opportunities may also come about. Resources, such as materials to prepare for certification exams and newsletters to stay abreast of new regulations are invaluable assets to SHRM membership.

SACRED HEART UNIVERSITY

Sacred Heart University (SHU) is unique in its offerings for human resources. The University offers a Master of Science or a 12-credit graduate certificate in Human Resource Management but not a bachelor’s degree. However, a prerequisite to admission is an undergraduate degree in business. For otherwise qualified degree holders they may be admitted with a stipulation to earn an additional 3 credits in business.

In 2013, SHU became one of only two universities in Connecticut to have implemented a master’s degree fully aligned with SHRM curriculum. Joining the student chapter holds many benefits for students including workshops on resume writing and job searching advice. They can also earn human resource certification through SHRM by applying the credits earned at SHU. More information on SHRM student chapter #5526 is available from the faculty supervisor:

UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN

SHRM worked collaboratively with University of New Haven (UNH) officials to design a Bachelor of Science in Business Management with a Concentration in Human Resource Management degree program. Part of the program is completion of a practicum, internship or independent study to build employability skills and connections. UNH has also developed a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree that is possible to complete with Saturday-only attendance to accommodate busy professionals. Students who complete the requirements also receive a Graduate Certificate in Human Resources Management.

For 15 consecutive years, the student SHRM #5360 chapter at UNH received a Superior Merit Award. SHRM bestows the award on chapters that exemplify the mission and intent of the organization through achievements and activities. One of its activities was to collaborate for networking possibilities with the American Society for Training and Development and the Human Resources Association of Greater New Haven. Elected student officers hold regular meetings with scheduled programs. Company tours, community service projects, career coaching workshops and social events are other activities organized to help introduce members to the business world and build relationships.

WESTERN CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY

A Bachelor in Business Administration (B.B.A.) with a concentration in Human Resource management can be earned at Western Connecticut State University (WSCU). The concentration is intended for students with an interest in related HR functions, such as interviewing and employee relations. A Master of Business Administration is an option for post graduate study. Elective opportunities are built into the program so those interested could include HR studies in their MBA program.

Danbury happens to be a location for a professional SHRM chapter- #0441. The chapter sponsors a scholarship program for a WSCU junior or senior who intends on entering the human resource field. WSCU students are invited to attend programs and monthly meetings. Professional members of the chapter have acted as mentors and resources for students doing projects and by offering them an inside glimpse into the real world of business. Maureen Gernert is the Student Chapter/Education Chair. She can be reached at 203-837-8266 or students can visit the chapter website at: http://www.shrmwc.org.
