SHRM Student Chapters in Louisiana

As the 25th most populous and 31st most extensive state in the nation situated in the southern region along the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi River, there are numerous Society for Human Resource Management Student Chapters in Louisiana to help students advance their knowledge of the HR field. With more than 250,000 members in more than 140 countries worldwide, the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) is the largest association on the globe that is devoted exclusively to enhancing the Human Resources profession.

Although Louisiana may be best known for jazz music, crawfish, gumbo, bayous, Tabasco sauce, Cajun culture, and festive Mardi Gras celebrations, there are several top-notch local student chapters sprinkled across the “Pelican State” to serve the unique learning needs of students with a desire to begin a career in Human Resource Management. When students take advantage of becoming a member of these universities’ SHRM chapters, they can benefit from learning more in-depth HR knowledge, gain practical experience, and build connections with professionals. Without further ado, the following are the nine Student Chapters for the SHRM in Louisiana.

Louisiana State University – Baton Rouge

Ranked as the 135th best college and 68th top public school in the nation by the U.S. News and World Report, the Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge is that state’s public flagship institution that holds both land-grant and sea-grant status in the heart of the capital city. While the E.J. Ourso College of Business offers a standard Master of Business Administration (MBA) program, the LSU College of Human Sciences and Education provides students with an online Master of Science in Human Resource Education with a concentration in Human Resource and Leadership Management. For networking and internship opportunities outside the classroom, students enrolled in at least six credit hours in any degree-seeking program with a demonstrated interest in the HR field are encouraged to join the LSU SHRM Student Chapter.

Louisiana Tech University

As the only public four-year research institution classified for high research activity by the prestigious Carnegie Foundation in the northern region of the state, Louisiana Tech University in Ruston is recognized as the 190th best college and 108th top public school in the nation by the U.S. News and World Report. In the College of Business’ Department of Management and Information Systems, aspiring HR professionals have the opportunity to pursue a Master of Science in Human Resources Management degree. Along with participating in the LTU Student SHRM Chapter, students can also prepare for PHR or SPHR certification through a professional development course program offered in partnership with the Society for Human Resource Management that is held in Wyly Tower Room 1109 for ten sessions.

McNeese State University

Located in southwestern Louisiana in the urban center of Lake Charles as a comprehensive public institution, McNeese State University is currently recognized as the 92nd best college and 47th top public school in the South by the U.S. News and World Report. Accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the College of Business offers a Bachelor of Science in Management with a concentration in Human Resource Management and a Master of Business Administration (MBA). Recently recognized as one of the top ten Outstanding Student Chapters in the nation at the annual SHRM conference, the MSU SHRM Chapter has 38 members and two faculty advisors that meet weekly to participate in networking, training, meeting, roundtable discussion, and recruitment opportunities related to human resource management.

Nicholls State University

With a unique blend of excellent academic programs designed to meet the needs of Louisiana and beyond, Nicholls State University is a comprehensive public institution in rural Thibodaux that has more than 6,000 students. In the Department of Management, Marketing, and Business Administration, students have the opportunity to pursue a Master of Science in Management with a concentration in Human Resource Management to learn how to nurture companies’ most valuable asset. As a recognized winner of the Superior Merit Award for 2012, students can also join the NSU Student Chapter to participate in the annual HR Jeopardy for the Bayou SHRM, Thibodaux Christmas Toy Drive, SHRM Etiquette Dinner, and bi-weekly meetings to network with fellow colleagues and local HR professionals.

Southeastern Louisiana University

Known for being the third largest public institution in Louisiana with a community of more than 15,000 students in Hammond, Southeastern Louisiana University is recognized as the second largest provider of distance education among all state universities. While the College of Business offers undergraduates a pathway to achieve a Bachelor of Arts in Management with a concentration in Human Resource Management, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences also grants a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership for graduates. Southern University and A&M College

With more African American graduates earning degrees than from any other university in the United States, Southern University and A&M College is a comprehensive public four-year institution that is part of the only historically black land-grant university system in the nation. Accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate School of Business (AACSB) International, the College of Business offers aspiring HR professionals pathways to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Management, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, or a Master of Business Administration. University of Louisiana – Monroe

Situated on an urban 238-acre campus in Monroe as a comprehensive public institution, University of Louisiana – Monroe is nationally acclaimed for offering the 160th best online bachelor’s programs and the 87th best online graduate business programs in the entire United States. With the goal of preparing students for productive careers and responsible citizenship, the College of Business and Social Sciences (CBSS) is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business to award a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership, Master of Science in Management, and Master of Business Administration. For students interested in human resources with good academic standing of a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, the ULM Student SHRM Chapter provides training on the skills need to complete in the business world through trivial games, cookouts, social networking events, guest speakers, and weekly meetings on Mondays at 5 PM in Hemphill Hall Room 134.

University of Louisiana – Lafayette

Considered the largest member of the University of Louisiana System with more than 16,000 students, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette is a public institution of higher education with high research activity and a distinctively Creole culture. Within the B.I. Moody III College of Business Administration, students can pursue a graduate degree in Business Administration, Finance, Risk Management, Management Information Systems, Management, and Professional Land and Resource Management. Located along the banks of Lake Pontchartrain about 20 minutes from the French Quarter in the “Big Easy,” the University of New Orleans is a major comprehensive public research institution with an international community of more than 8,500 students. Within the College of Business Administration, undergraduate students can pursue a Bachelor of Science in Management with a concentration in Human Resource Management and graduate students can pursue a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
