Montana, which is known for its beautiful scenery and majestic mountains, is also home to some excellent academic programs in human resource management that are enhanced by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) student chapters in Montana.

The north western state is an outdoor enthusiast’s delight as it boasts a broad spectrum of natural resources like rivers, lakes and rugged wilderness areas. The famed Glacier National Park, portions of Yellowstone National Park and other protected lands are situated within its borders. Students who choose to enroll in one of Montana’s university human resource management degree programs also have many opportunities to enjoy some of the best skiing that the country has to offer. Here are some schools and their human resource programs that have earned distinction within Montana.

Montana State University – Bozeman

Montana State University (MSU) at Bozeman offers students human resource coursework as part of their undergraduate business degree with a concentration in management. Even though the university does not have a dedicated human resource academic program, it is the home of the SHRM student chapter for that area. The chosen university contact for the SHRM student chapter is associate professor of management Dr. Virginia Bratton who has her doctorate in organizational behavior and human resource management. The university’s human resource coursework focuses upon helping students develop leadership and supervisory skills, dispute resolution expertise and business communications abilities. The SHRM student chapter offers MSU students a link to the latest research and news articles that impact the career field of human resource management. The student regional SHRM chapter is supported by the regional chapter that regularly facilitates human resource related educational presentations and conferences.

Trident University International

Trident University International is an online school that offers both an undergraduate and graduate degree in human resource management. The Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management degree presents students with the foundational courses of the human resource management discipline like staffing, recruiting, training and benefits. Trident’s undergraduate human resource management program also incorporates general business classes like finance, accounting, marketing and information systems into its core curriculum so that students understand the environment where they will be working as human resource professionals. The graduate degree in human resource management provides students with more in-depth instruction in the discipline that gives them the tools to contribute to operational activities as well as strategic decision making. Its SHRM student chapter is a virtual chapter led by Dr. Randall Frandrich, and it is the only one of its kind in the state.

University of Montana – Missoula

The University of Montana (UM) at Missoula incorporates its human resource management coursework into its undergraduate management degree program. Human resource management is one of four tracks offered under the management program, and coursework for that track includes business negotiation, labor economics and organizational communication just to name a few. Other specialized business courses are included in the human resource management track like international business, inter-cultural management and business ethics. The campus hosts a SHRM student chapter that is led by Paula Barber, SPHR of On Point Recruiting. SHRM has not only provided professional development programs for human resource management students, but regional SHRM chapter members participate in the UM School of Business Administration’s (SOBA) career development programs. SHRM members critique resumes and help students practice critical job interview techniques. While Paula Barber is cited as the SHRM student chapter advisor and point of contact, it was two students in the management degree program who started the SHRM student chapter. They recognized the value of SHRM early as they took advantage of the organization’s free student membership to network with area professionals at monthly luncheons.
