Those who study human resource management can join the school’s student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management, which assists them in professional networking, skill development, and even internship location. The SHRM System is also present on campus, which includes a four-week preparation program for those entering the HR field without prior educational experience in human resources at the undergraduate or graduate levels. Unfortunately, ECU currently offers no graduate-level programs in the field.

While undergraduate students are encouraged to choose a concentration for their studies, which might include human resource management, NC A&T’s primary focus on human resource management exists at the graduate level. Located centrally n the growing city of Durham, North Carolina Central University offers an undergraduate concentration in human resource management that sets the stage for graduate-level coursework in this expanding field. The school does not currently offer a program in human resource management for graduate students, but does offer elective coursework in human resources for those who pursue an MBA or MS in Management at the school. The SHRM chapter on-campus is closely linked with chapters at North Carolina State University and UNC Chapel Hill, since all three student chapters are overseen by the Triangle Area professional chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management. The chapter is recognized as one of the largest and most successful in the country, and guides students toward prestigious internships and excellent job placement after graduation, as well as special conferences throughout the Tar Heel State.

University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill
UNC Chapel Hill is consistently ranked as one of the country’s “Public Ivies,” with a more than 300-year reputation that helps it stand out as the first public university in the country. Unique among HR programs in North Carolina, both the undergraduate program in human resource management and the SHRM student chapter, are organized under the Department of Sociology. As with many North Carolina universities, those who wish to specialize in human resource management can opt to do so at the undergraduate level by choosing a concentration in the field. Graduate students in the MBA program, or the MS in Management program, can choose this concentration as well. All students with a business background are invited to joint he student SHRM chapter, and many of them continue their membership in the Triangle Area professional chapter after graduation.

University of North Carolina – Charlotte
UNC Charlotte’s Belk School of Business is quickly becoming one of the largest and most prestigious such schools in the state of North Carolina. This rapid growth is driven by Charlotte’s status as the second-largest banking center in the United States, home to the national headquarters of Bank of America and the second-largest Wells Fargo regional outpost in the country. The school’s SHRM student chapter is part of the Charlotte Area Society for Human Resource Management, which works with several schools in the area and provides a pathway to professional membership for the school’s graduates. Concentrations in human resource management are offered alongside the B.S. in Business Administration program, the M.S. in Management, and the MBA program. No pure HRM majors are offered at UNCC.

University of North Carolina – Wilmington
UNCW is another fast-growing campus in the University of North Carolina system, and has the distinction of providing the most comprehensive HR concentration of the three schools mentioned here. UNC Wilmington’s human resource management concentration is offered to undergraduate students pursuing a business administration minor, and gives them a great deal of information about human resource laws, policies, ethical considerations, legal frameworks, and more. The student SHRM chapter is quite large as a result, and regularly arranges guest speaker series’, on-campus HR simulations, networking events, and much more. Students in the program can join the Wilmington Area professional chapter after they graduate with their undergraduate degree.

Wake Forest University
Though Wake Forest University offers a compelling student chapter of the SHRM that regularly arranges networking events and on-campus human resources simulations, the school offers no clear concentration in this academic area at either the graduate or undergraduate levels. Those in the undergraduate business administration program will have access to a large number of elective courses discussing human resource management, but this does not constitute a traditional concentration like it would at other schools. The good news for those interested in HR, however, is that a very strong SHRM student chapter fills in the gaps and provides ample opportunities for professional growth while on campus.

WSSU affords undergraduate students the chance to study human resources management as a concentration within the school’s management major. No graduate program is offered, but the coursework at the undergraduate level is still quite rigorous and does prepare students for graduate work elsewhere. The student SHRM chapter links up with the Wake Forest student chapter through the Winston-Salem Area professional SHRM.
