SHRM Student Chapters in Iowa

Known as the “American Heartland”, situated in the Midwestern region of the United States as the only state in the nation whose eastern and western borders are entirely formed by rivers, there are several Society for Human Resource Management Student Chapters in Iowa to serve the professional needs of HR students throughout the state. Briar Cliff University

Within the BCU Business Department, aspiring HR professionals have the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Human Resource Management or a Master of Arts in Management with an emphasis in Human Resources that has been fully aligned with the guidelines set by the Society for Human Resource Management. With the goal of developing strategic business partners for success in maintaining a motivated workforce, the BCU Student SHRM Chapter provides practical hands-on learning and networking opportunities through monthly meetings held in Heelan Hall Room 154.

Buena Vista University

As a comprehensive private institution based on a picturesque 60-acre campus on the shores of Storm Lake with 16 satellite locations placed conveniently across Iowa, Buena Vista University is currently ranked as the 11th best college and 3rd top value school in the Midwest by the U.S. News and World Report. Within the BVU School of Graduate and Professional Studies, human resources specialists can pursue a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership or a Master of Science in Management with a Human Resource Management concentration track. In addition to covering topics in conflict management, interviewing, personal finances, organization theory, management information systems, and industrial psychology in the classroom with a valuable management internship experience, graduate students are welcome to join the BVU Student SHRM Chapter for a small membership fee to network with fellow colleagues as well as area professionals.

Drake University

Currently ranked as the 3rd best college, 11th top value school, and 1st best university for veterans in the Midwest by the U.S. News and World Report, Drake University is a comprehensive private institution situated in the state’s capital at Des Moines. While the College of Business and Public Administration offers a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree program that has been accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the School of Education has recently created a Master of Science in Leadership Development (MSLD) with tracks in Human Resource Management (HRM) and Human Resource Development (HRD). In order to supplement learning within these two programs that are aligned with the SHRM curriculum guidelines, it is recommended that aspiring human resource leaders join the Drake Student SHRM Chapter on-campus to participate in further professional development training opportunities to gain exposure across the body of HR knowledge in a fun and interactive environment.

Iowa State University

As a major public research land-grant institution of more than 25,000 students that dwarfs the small town of Ames in which it stands proudly, Iowa State University is currently recognized as the 101st best college and 47th top public school in the nation by the U.S. News and World Report. Within the 70th best business school in the United States, the Department of Management offers a Master of Science in Management program that covers an extensive curriculum on managerial accounting, finances, organizational behaviors, ethics, employee training, personnel development, and human resource management. With the mission of promoting student interest in all areas of labor relations and human relations on-campus, the IA State Student SHRM Chapter has 22 members who are required to attend bi-monthly meetings on Wednesday evenings to participate in group discussions with guest speakers from nearby corporations on specific areas related to human resource practices.

Loras College

Although Loras does not offer a direct degree in Human Resources Management, the Student SHRM Chapter on-campus enables aspiring HR professionals to gain access to how-to guides, research, news, seminars, conferences, online communities, and internship opportunities to further professional development in preparation for PHR or SPHR certification examinations for leadership.
